Smoke Chamber Repair

The Smoke chamber is the area directly above the fireplace damper that helps smoke find it’s way up into the flue. Shaped like an up-side-down funnel, smoke and hot gasses are in direct contact with the tapered smoke chamber walls as you burn your fires. For this reason, building code requires that the smoke chamber walls be at least 8” thick and “parged” smooth. Parging is where the inside surfaces of the smoke chamber are sealed with a layer of mortar in order to close off any holes or gaps where heated flue gasses or carbon monoxide might escape, possibly causing a fire or physical harm to the occupants. In some cases, the smoke chamber has not been parged, or holes in the parging may be present. In addition, sometimes the bottom flue tile is not sealed properly to the smoke chamber. CHAMBER-TECH 2000 is a specialized insulating mortar specifically designed to address smoke chamber deficiencies. Able to stick to vertical and inverted surfaces, CHAMBER-TECH 2000 can be applied and smoothed on the smoke chamber walls to seal off and insulate this critical area of your fireplace system. CHAMBER-TECH 2000 will insulate, reducing conduction to combustible materials, add needed structural strength and at the same time shape the smoke chamber to help establish a strong draft and keep your fireplace from smoking up your home!

Seal Decorative Facing and Damper Frame to Firebox

Did you know that the brickwork you often see surrounding your fireplace opening is just a facade of bricks that conceals a flammable 2X4 stud wall?! This Facade is called “Decorative Facing” and it is in no way actually a part of the chimney or fireplace itself! Decorative Facing simply cover the flammable 2X4’s which make up the wall. Did you know that if your Fireplace’s brickwork is not sealed properly to this brick facade (decorative facing) hot gasses or fire could migrate up into the wall stud cavity and start a fire? If this is the case with your fireplace, DO NOT CONTINUE TO BURN FIRES UNTIL THESE GAPS ARE SEALED WITH PROPER REFRACTORY CEMENT! Ask your Chimney Sweep for further details and he will be happy answer your questions.
